Resumen: El topillo nival Chionomys nivalis (Martins, 1842) es una especie relicta de la época glaciar que hoy en día presenta una distribución muy discontinua por la mitad septentrional del paleártico occidental, donde ocupa hábitats de tipo rocoso, fundamentalmente en los principales macizos montañosos. En la Península Ibérica se distinguen cinco núcleos poblacionales principales localizados respectivamente en Pirineos, Cordillera Cantábrica, Sistema Ibérico, Sistema Central y Sierra Nevada. Sierra Nevada representa el límite más suroccidental del área de distribución del neverón, pero lejos de haber suscitado este hecho un interés intrínseco la verdad es que hasta la fecha su presencia en el Parque Nacional de Sierra Nevada está únicamente basada en un escaso número de citas. En el presente estudio se revisa, confirma y amplía la distribución histórica conocida del topillo nival en el Parque Nacional y Natural de Sierra Nevada. Para la realización de este trabajo se subdividió el área de estudio en cuadrículas UTM de 10 x10 km en las cuales se llevó a cabo un muestreo de tipo estratificado, centrando el esfuerzo de muestreo en los parches de hábitat potencial para el topillo nival. Se utilizaron técnicas de muestreo tanto de tipo directo como indirecto. Se muestrearon en total 100 zonas potenciales distribuidas por todo el área de estudio verificándose la presencia de topillo nival en el 75% de ellas. De este modo no sólo constatamos su presencia en las áreas conocidas de su distribución en el Parque, sino que aportamos nuevas localizaciones concretas dentro de éstas áreas y ampliamos el rango de distribución del topillo nival en Sierra Nevada confirmando su presencia en seis nuevas cuadrículas.

Abstract: The snow vole is a glacial relic that currently has a highly fragmented distribution spread throughout the south-western paleartic region. It is found in rocky habitats, such as scree, usually at the top of the main mountain ranges. There are five main population nuclei in the Iberian Peninsula. These populations are located in: the Pyrenees, the Cantabrian, Iberian and Central Systems, and the Sierra Nevada mountain ranges. The Sierra Nevada National and Natural Parks represent the most south-western limit of its distribution area; however, this population has not been well studied. This study provides an update on the historically known distribution of the snow vole in the Sierra Nevada National and Natural Parks. The study area was subdivided into 10x10 km UTM grids. Stratified sampling was conducted focusing on potential patches of habitats for the snow vole. Both direct and indirect sampling methods were applied. A total of 100 potential localities were sampled in the study area verifying the presence of snow voles in 75% of them. This study examines the presence of the snow vole in its former known distribution areas in the park, maps and details new locations within these areas, and extends the distribution range in the Sierra Nevada due to the discovery of its presence in six new grids.
